MinPlex® Copper
The Stabilized Organic Copper for All Livestock Species
Role of Copper in Livestock
The role of Copper in animal nutrition is similar to that of zinc with an additional role in synthesis of hemoglobin and skin pigmentation. Copper along with zinc helps build immune mechanisms in the body. Copper is essential for several metabolic enzymes for their activity, especially those involved in connective tissue, central nervous system and iron metabolism. Deficiency of Copper adversely affects the reproductive functions, poor pigmentation of skin, anemia, mastitis, retained placenta, early embryonic death in animals and poor hatchability in birds. Copper is rapidly depleted during stressful conditions and animals need to be supplemented early and in most bioavailable forms to prevent physiological and productivity complications.
Copper is predominantly absorbed in small intestine. Feed ingredients are primary sources of Copper to livestock and hence its levels in feed are dependent on the soil content where the feed ingredients are grown. The bioavailability of elemental Copper is significantly interfered by other minerals, bioinhibitors like tannins, phytates, enzymes etc. Sulphur is reported as a significant antagonist of Copper in the intestine.
Why Organic Copper
Inorganic supplementation of Copper in the form of its salts has been in vogue for several years. As the salts of Copper have unreliable solubility and poor bioavailability of mineral, the need for a precise and reliable source was felt which resulted in evolution of organic forms of Copper. Of various forms available in the market, Copper chelates and complexes with amino acids have been proven as useful tools in Copper supplementation. Organic forms stable in various pH levels of the gut have been proven to offer highest bioavailability.
