The Complete Microbial System for Rumen Optimization

Importance of Rumen Optimization
Research has consistently shown that the most efficient way to drive a ruminant animal to meet and exceed its production and performance objectives is to help increase its dry matter intake. Feed intake by a ruminant animal is directly proportional to the rumen activity and evacuation. A well nurtured rumen microbial population can provide up to 50-80% of a ruminant animal’s energy and the daily recommended nutrients account only for the remainder.

Rumen fermentation and environment are complex and a function of 3 interlinked factors, - the pH, the cellulolytic (fiber digesting) bacteria and the rumen protozoa. Internally, the pH of rumen is often affected by lactate production, a routine metabolite of rumen fermentation. In normal course, the lactate is utilized by specific bacteria and thus the pH is maintained at 6.0. At this pH the cellulolytic bacteria thrive well, derive their energy requirements and produce short chain volatile fatty acids (acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid) which in turn help the ruminant animal derive its energy through gluconeogenic pathways. Due to any reason when the lactate accumulates in rumen, the pH drops, suppressing the cellulolytic bacteria and this leads to accumulation of fiber in the rumen. When the pH drop persists, it leads to acidosis, impaction, delayed emptying of rumen and thus reduced intake. Cellulolytic bacterial activity accounts for the majority of fiber digestion in the rumen. These bacteria capture most of the energy from fiber when pH is maintained at or above 6.0.

The microbial population of rumen helps synthesizing protein through various metabolic activities including synthesis of vitamin B12 and by converting dietary protein. Such protein is passed on to the intestine for further digestion, absorption and assimilation. These microbes apart from protein synthesis also help maintain the rumen pH through stimulation of lactate utilizing bacteria, minimizing rumen degradation of protein, thereby preventing ammonia accumulation in rumen. Any input into rumen that can regulate these complex fermentation and environment mechanisms of rumen can help the animal derive best out of its feed and convert into produce such as milk or meat.

Microbial Systems for Rumen Optimization
Research also has shown the role of direct fed microbials in optimizing the rumen. Fungal cultures in ruminant diets are in vogue for more than 65 years; Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Aspergillus oryzae or a combination of both along with certain cellulolytic (fiber digesting) bacteria have been proven to be of significant value.

Fungal cultures have been shown to improve rumen environment in several ways, such as decreasing lactate accumulation by stimulating the lactate utilizing bacteria; reducing ammonia accumulation without reducing the proteolytic, peptidolytic or deaminiative activity of rumen microbes; diverting hydrogen flow away from methane and into propionate and butyrate; producing cellulolytic (fiber digesting) enzymes; producing certain unidentified factors capable of stimulating the growth of rumen bacterial population, etc. Yeast cultures also enhance palatability of feed. Probiotic bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis,Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus coagulans, etc thrive well in the rumen environment and help maintaining thepHof rumen at around 6.0. Several studies have also indicated the importance of supplementing nutritive media and rumen buffering agents to enhance the functional abilities of these direct fed microbials in rumen.
