Niacin, also known as vitamin B3 or nicotinic acid, is essential for protein, fat and carbohydrate metabolism, and thus energy release in tissues and cells. It helps to strengthen the nervous and digestive systems.

Animals lacking in niacin may develop skin and digestion problems. A diet with niacin supplements is known to increase milk yields in cows.
