The Stabilized Organic Cobalt for all Livestock Species

Role of Cobalt in Livestock
Cobalt is a dietary essential nutrient in livestock as it is a constituent of Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamine) which is necessary for blood formation. It has ahigher significance in ruminant nutrition as Cobalt is used by the rumen microflora for synthesis of Vitamin B12. Cobalt is also a cofactor in propionate utilization by ruminants. In Cobalt deficiency, rumen microflora cannot synthesize.

Vitamin B12 and hence results in anemia. The other signs of manifestation include anorexia, retarded growth, emaciation, rough hair coat, pale skin and mucous membranes, stumbling gait, drop in milk production, poor fertility etc. Dietary Cobalt is the primary source of mineral to livestock. Most feed raw materials contain Cobalt in sufficient quantities to meet the animals requirements. Cobalt deficiency is rare in simple stomach animals, but common in ruminants. Cobalt is poorly absorbed and is not stored sufficiently in body. Its absorption from intestine is often hampered by other mineral interactions, bioinhibitors like phytates, tannins, fibre, enzymes etc. Cobalt can be supplemented in both organic and inorganic forms.

Why Organic Cobalt
Inorganic supplementation of Cobalt as its salts has been in vogue for several years. As the salts of Cobalt have unreliable solubility and poor bioavailability of mineral, the need for a precise and reliable source was felt which resulted in evolution of organic forms of Cobalt. Of various forms available in the market, Cobalt chelates and complexes with amino acids have been proven as useful tools in Cobalt supplementation. Organic forms stable in various pH levels of the gut have been proven to offer highest bioavailability.
