MinPlex® Zinc The Stabilized Organic Zinc for All Livestock Species Role of Zinc in Livestock Zinc is a vital trace element in animal nutrition with its multifaceted role in metabolism, immunity, reproduction and cell integrity. Zinc acts as a co factor in activation of enzymes for synthesis of nucleic acids RNA, DNA and proteins, carbohydrate metabolism for energy and steroidogenesis for gonadal and reproductive hormones. Zinc is critical for synthesis of cell wall protein Keratin for keratinisation of epithelial cells of teat canal and hoof, which forms the physical and first line of defense against mastitis and laminitis in animals. Zinc also plays a key role in cell and antibody mediated immune responses and builds body defense mechanisms. Zinc, as an integral component of enzyme Carbonic anhydrase, is critical for synthesis of calcium carbonate for formation of eggshell in birds. Zinc stabilizes cell membranes and strengthens integrity and protection against microbial toxins and tissue oxidative products. Zinc also plays an important role in electrolyte balance. Zinc is predominantly absorbed in small intestine. Feed ingredients are primary sources of Zinc to livestock and hence its levels in feed are dependent on the soil content where the feed ingredients are grown. The bioavailability of elemental Zinc is significantly interfered by other minerals, bio inhibitors like tannins, phytates, enzymes etc. Zinc is transported across the epithelial cell membrane through a specific cell carrier protein. Zinc can be supplemented in both organic and inorganic forms. Why Organic Zinc Inorganic supplementation of Zinc as its salts has been in vogue for sever al years. As the salts of Zinc have unreliable solubility and poor bioavailability of mineral, the need for a precise and reliable source was felt which resulted in evolution of organic forms of Zinc. Of various forms available in the market, Zinc chelates and complexes with amino acids have been proven as useful tools in Zinc supplementation. Organic forms stable in various pH levels of the gut have been proven to offer highest bioavailability.
