The Stabilized Organic Trace Mineral Supplement for Dairy Cattle

Role of Trace Minerals in Dairy Cattle
Milk yield in lactating animals is directly proportional to the plane of nutrition and health in the animal. A healthy cow on balanced nutrition only can exploit the complete genetic potential of milk yield. One of the factors that determine the plane of nutrition in animal is the nutrient utilization. Best of feed formulations fail to yield best results for want of balance and availability of supporting nutrients, especially, the trace minerals, which govern the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Similarly, plane of health in an animal is a manifestation of balance of membrane integrity, optimal functionality and resistance to microbes and their metabolites at the molecular level. Trace minerals again play a vital role in these functions of cells. Thus, Trace Minerals, although required in small quantities, have a greater significance in productivity in livestock and in milk production in Dairy Cattle.

Among the several trace minerals supplemented to Dairy cattle, the ones requiring special attention are the Zinc, Manganese, Copper, Cobalt and Selenium, as they share in common some of the functions. Zinc, Manganese and Copper are important as activators and cofactors of several enzymes catalyzing metabolic activities. Manganese and Selenium protect cells against damaging effects of free radicals from tissue oxidation. Zinc, Manganese, Copper and Selenium collectively strengthen the defense mechanisms of the immune system while Zinc, Manganese, Copper and Cobalt help enhancing the fertility and reproductive functions of the animal. Cobalt has a special role of promoting the quality and quantity of rumen microflora, which in turn help efficient utilization of the nutrient principles from feed and fodder.

Although these Trace Minerals are present in requisite levels in feed, their absorption is often poor from the intestine as it is interfered by other mineral interactions or by bioinhibitors like phytates, oxalates, tannins, fiber, enzymes, etc. Therefore, they require supplementation in feed, which can be in both inorganic and organic forms.

Why Organic Trace Minerals
Inorganic supplementation of Trace Minerals has been in vogue for several years. As the salts of Trace Minerals have extreme toxicity, unreliable solubility and poor bioavailability of mineral, the need for a precise and reliable source was felt which resulted in evolution of organic forms. Of various forms available in the market, Trace Mineral chelates and complexes with amino acids have been proven as useful tools in Trace Mineral supplementation. Organic forms stable in various pH levels of the gut have been proven to offer highest bioavailability.
